Brief Nicaragua

The city of Managua is the capital of Nicaragua, and has a population estimated in a million inhabitants. It was originally a small indigenous city.

After the Independence of the country from the Spanish crown in 1821, Managua was denominated as a City in 1846, and it became the capital of the Republic of Nicaragua in 1852.

It is the smallest department in size but the most populated in the country. Masaya, with its Department Capital sharing the same name, is located 29 kms from Managua.

The department has the following towns: Masaya, Nindiri, Tisma, Catarina, San Juan de Oriente or San Juan de Los Platos, Niquinohomo, Nandasmo, Masatepe and San Juan de La Concepción or La Concha.

Granada was founded in 1524 by Francisco Hernandez de Córdoba, named in honor of his birthplace in Granada, Spain.

In the seventeenth century, due to its geographic location, Granada suffered from constant pirate invasions and lootings. These invasions occurred in 1665, 1670 and 1685. In 1856, the city was set on fire and was almost totally destroyed by the followers of the Filibuster William Walker.
