Located in the Cordillera de la Sal, it represents an extraordinary attraction because of its similarity to the moon´s landscape and its enormous natural coliseum. Depart from your Hotel in San Pedro of Atacama and head to the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt Mountain Range), very rich in minerals. Arrive at Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley), a mountainous and sandy site with a particular geographical beauty. Its salt formations look like sculptures and works of art. Continue on to Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), a small depression of saline ground, containing a number of small, sharp-crested hills where once there used to be a lake. This unique place is famous for its natural mineral sculptures, one of them the Las Tres Marías formed by wind erosion. It truly resembles a lunar setting. You will learn about the inhabitants of this region and their way of life from pre-Columbian to Colonial times. You will discover the customs and traditions of the different cultures that lived in the area by visiting archaeological sites such as Tulor and the Pukará de Quitor. The village of Tulor is the oldest remaining ancient community in the Atacama Basin, and the first human settlement called “Cuna de los LikanAntai (Cradle of the LikanAntai people)”. Toconao Village & Atacama Salt Flat The fresh water that flows from the Toconao village allows this oasis to flourish amid this extremely arid desert. Located northeast of the great Atacama Salt flat, this town is the perfect place to indulge on millennial craftwork. From your Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama, we head to the Toconao village, crossing a flat plain, where the Licancabur Volcano watches you from afar. Once in Toconao, stop at the San Lucas Church, made of mud and straw, with its typical tower and bell built in 1641. Toconao’s fresh waters allow this oasis to grow all kinds of fruit. The fields are cultivated according to the traditional Pre-Hispanic pattern of irregularly-shaped small patches watered by a community irrigation system. After this, continue to the local handicraft fair which is very popular for its Alpaca wool and creative crafts made of cactus or volcanic stone. Our journey will take us to the fabulous Atacama Salt Flat -the largest in Chile- which reaches out 3,000 square kilometers, and is located 55 kilometers away from San Pedro de Atacama. You will admire the pink flamingos in the National Reserve of Los Flamencos, a protected flamingo breeding reservoir. The Chaxa Lagoon is also close by. Its shores are thickly encrusted with salt and salt floats on its surface. This is a great viewpoint to recognize the different Flemish species. Walk around and enjoy this unique sight and don’t forget your camera, surely one of these will be one of your favorite photographs! The best time to appreciate the Tatio Geysers is very early in the morning, so you will be picked up around 4 AM from your Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. At approximately 95 kilometers away from San Pedro and 4,300 meters above sea level, its fumaroles easily reach 10 meters high and the geysers up to 8 meters. This geothermic field is flanked by soaring peaks, the ground colors and the metal blue sky at sunrise, framed by the rising steam columns, make a simply breathtaking view. After watching this delightful spectacle, it is time to enjoy a delicious breakfast to later spend time at the hot pool with an average temperature of 36° C. Visit Machuca, a little town where local families dedicate their life to grazing and agriculture. There is a good chance to find flock of flamingos, ducks and gulls.
